Established in 2009, Edmonds Warriors Basketball is the feeder program for the Edmonds-Woodway High School (EWHS) boys basketball program. The program includes 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams, drawing players from within the EWHS boundaries. Teams compete in the AAU-sanctioned WESCO Youth Basketball League, which includes 20 teams from Snohomish, North King and Skagit counties.
Goals and objectives:
The goal of EWB is to prepare players to enter the EWHS boys basketball program. Objectives of the program include having fun, teaching essential basketball skills, teaching participants to compete against quality opponents, building a winning tradition, teaching life lessons through the medium of basketball, and encouraging the positive attitude, enthusiasm, and work ethic it takes to be successful at basketball -- and life.
Tryouts & Notifications:
Please see home page for tryout information. Tryouts are usually held in October. Players who try out will be notified within a week of the coach’s decision. Players who are not selected are strongly encouraged to pursue opportunities through their school, or through Recreational leagues such as:
Sno-King Youth Club http://www.skyc.net
Alderwood Boys & Girls Club http://bgcsc.org/snohomish-clubs/alderwood-club/alderwood-sports/
Parent & Player Meeting:
Following selection notification, a meeting for parents and players will be scheduled. At this meeting, parents/players will order uniforms (if needed), meet coaches, make a mandatory first payment and get important information about the program.
Number of Players per Team:
We prefer that each team have 10 players. However, the number of players carried can vary at the discretion of the coach and the EWB Board of Directors. Playing up a grade is not usually allowed in our program, as we are trying to develop cohort teams that will enter high school in the same class.
Time Commitment & Attendance:
Players are expected to be at each practice and all games. If a player must miss a practice or game, it is expected that the player will contact his coach as soon as possible.
Practices: Practices begin October. Practices days, times and locations are TBD. Teams usually have two practices per week, Nov-Mar.
League Games:
EWB plays in the WESCO Feeder league . Game schedules are available by the end of November, with league games beginning in early December. 5th-8th grade typically plays 14-16 league games. Fourth grade league games are dependent on total teams in league.
Tournaments:
We try to play a minimum of three tournaments each season, not including the WESCO season-end tournament. Traditional tournaments include the Juanita Turkey Trot and the MLK tournament in Bellingham. A third tournament is selected at the coaches discretion among State qualifiers or DYS options.
Playing Time:
Playing time is earned on the basis of effort, attention, commitment, and ability displayed in practice and games. The purpose of the feeder program is to develop young athletes in preparation to compete at the high school level. The program is competitive and coaches will focus on how best to develop talent and put their team in the best position to win. Playing time is not guaranteed and may fluctuate depending on the competition, a player’s effort, attitude, and abilities.
Playing on Other Teams:
We recognize and encourage athletes to compete in other sports. However, during basketball season, we expect players to attend all practices and games. Making EWB the number one sport activity during the season is essential to ensure your son gets as much out of the experience as possible.
Coaches:
The board strives each year to bring in the very best coaches we can find. Coaches devote many hours of their time to practices and games. Although we try to provide a modest stipend to help cover expenses for gas, food and (occasionally) lodging, they are not coaching for the money. Please treat them with respect and understanding. If you have concerns, feel free to speak with them directly.
Cost:
The Club Team fee is approximately $650 for the 2025-2026 season. Fees cover expenses such as gym rentals, tournament entry fees, school district maintenance and custodial services, referees and league fees, equipment, and other expenses. Additional tournaments, if any, are not funded by the team and fees will be split by the families that choose to participate. State tournament fees are partly subsidized by the club. Families who choose to attend travel tournaments, including State, are responsible for all family travel related expenses.
NOTE:
Players will not be allowed to practice or play in games if payments are not current. Payment plans and partial scholarships are available and will be considered by the board based on financial need.
24 Hour Rule:
Parents, guardians, and other family members are not allowed to confront a coach, team, player, or board member to discuss any event that may have taken place in practice or a game until after 24 hours have passed from the practice or game has completed. This rule is meant to promote a more respectful and constructive approach to handling issues that may arise.
Parent Expectations:
As members of this program, you represent the Edmonds-Woodway Community!
Parents are expected to exhibit a high degree of sportsmanship and provide their Athlete with positive encouragement. Parents must refrain from coaching from the sidelines during training, practice, and games. They must respect the 24-hour rule when addressing coaches or program staff. Parents are expected to refrain from expressing negative opinion of the coaches or fellow players in front of their Athlete, other parents, or in a public setting. Parents should refrain from yelling, confronting, or threatening referees, opposing players or coaches at all times. Failure to meet these expectations may result in dismissal from the program
Remember that our athletes are still maturing. Be an example of good sportsmanship and positive attitude! Student-athletes will benefit from positive examples on how to handle adversity, playing time, and emotions.
Volunteering:
EWB depends on parent volunteers. We need a team parent for each grade to help the coach with scheduling and team communications. We also need volunteers to keep score, run the time clock, set up and take down equipment at the gyms for home games, staff the snack table and serve on the board. Please contact a board member if interested. If you don’t volunteer, you likely will be asked.
